It’s always exciting to be able to be a part of an event geared towards encouraging women and minorities in mathematics. I recently attended Beyond the Binary, an inclusive conference at University of Hartford geared towards undergraduates, organized by Alicia Marino and Hwayeon Ryu.
One of the highlights of the conference was the panels.
My office mate Noelle Sawyer was on one the panels. It was interesting to attend as a graduate student. Also, although there were panelists from both academia and a variety of industry jobs, there were a lot of similarities in the advice given.
Another highlight of the conference was the networking session. It was a great opportunity to meet and chat with undergraduates that are pursuing math. I met these two really inspiring students from Barnard; they had gotten up at 4am to get on a bus in order to attend the conference. I’ve gone to some conferences that are pretty far away, but that is a serious amount of dedication and I applaud them for it.
